Warns of Rs 40,000 fine, legal action against defaulters

Kohima, May 1 (MExN): The Khonoma Youth Organisation (KYO) has reiterated its ban on hunting within Khonoma jurisdiction, warning that violators will face a fine of Rs 40,000 per individual and risk prosecution under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

KYO President Keviseto Savino, in a press release, said that despite the existing ban, some unscrupulous persons have been found hunting in the area. The KYO stated that penalties have been imposed on them while picnickers with air-guns have also been noticed and cautioned not to repeat the same.

The organisation added that hunting of wildlife and birds in any form is strictly prohibited within Khonoma jurisdiction, and animals or birds hunted in other areas will not be permitted to be brought into the village without prior permission.

The organisation further warned that anyone caught hunting in the village jurisdiction will be fined Rs 40,000 per individual and Khonoma citizen accompanying the outsider(s) will be equally penalised.

Regarding confiscated arms and hunting equipment, KYO said that such items seized by the Action Committee must be claimed within 10 days upon payment of a fine of Rs 5000, after which no claims will be entertained.

KYO cautioned that failure to comply with the stipulated rules would invite severe repercussions, including being booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
