Labour dept implements Employee’s State Insurance Scheme in Nagaland

Nagaland’s Labour department has been implementing Employee’s State Insurance Scheme (ESIS) in Nagaland. The ESIS is an integrated measure of social insurance embodied in the Employees' State Insurance Act and it is designed to accomplish the task of protecting 'employees' as declined in the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 against the impact of incidences of sickness, maternity, disablement and death due to employment injury and to provide medical care to Insured Persons (IP) and their families, according to the Annual Administrative Report 2022-23 of the labour department tabled in the first session of 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on March 23 by CM Neiphiu Rio.

Labour dept implements Employee’s State Insurance Scheme in Nagaland

The ESI Scheme applies to factories and other establishments wherein 10 or more persons are employed.

Employees of factories and establishments, drawing wages upto Rs. 21,000 a month, are entitled to social security cover under the ESI Act. The ESI Scheme is financed by contributions from employers and employees. The revised rate of contribution by employer is 3.25% of the wages payable to employees. The employees' contribution is at the rate of 0.75% of the wages payable to an employee, the report stated. The report stated that the scheme provides for Primary, Secondary & Super Speciality Medical Care to the insured persons and their dependants. ESI scheme is implemented in the districts of Dimapur, Mokokchung and Kohima.

A total of 3332 Insured Persons are registered under the scheme and medical benefits have been availed by 363 beneficiaries during the year under report.

Benefits under ESI scheme: Sickness Benefit; Disablement Benefit; Dependants Benefit; Maternity Benefit; Medical Benefit.
