Dimapur: Talking to The Morung Express, the Consumer Society Dimapur (CSD) discussed the lack of financial assistance from the State Government in their voluntary functions and awareness programs. In an exclusive meeting with the members of the CSD, it was disclosed that the organization lacks in finance which is the main reason why certain developmental functions and awareness programs not being carried out accordingly.
In one instance, it was informed that the Centre had issued an order in the month of February to execute consumer awareness education in schools in Nagaland, but due to lack of fund and initiative from the government, the implementation of the same was not accomplished. It was known that the center had issued approximately 65 lakhs to the State for implementing the program however; no funds were handed to the CSD from the State Government. The CSD had issued another letter to the Center seeking financial assistance of the same cause. The reply is being awaited.
It may be mentioned that the CSD is a non- profitable semi- governmental organization which functions on every issue related to the consumers. It is directly accountable to the State government under the departments of Dimapur Municipal Council, Administration, Supplies and Veterinary and Animal Husbandry. It may be mentioned that the CSD was established in1994 under the Amendment Act of 1951 of Indian Constitution, which was further implemented in 1986 in India. All the members of CSD are on voluntary service without salary.
According to the Secretary, Vinito Chopy, the CSD is entirely a consumer oriented body and any problems faced by the consumers are the main concern to the organization. Our duty is to check the various malfunctioning of products that the consumers are benefited with. Verification of expired goods, price variations, poor quality of goods, adulteration, non-availability, black marketing and hoarding, detecting weights and measures and issues on misleading information by manufactures and salesman are under ‘our most vigil duties’.
Besides, it also checks into the duplication of motor vehicle parts and any domestic related bills.
the CSD urged the public to insist on original cash memos, which will serve in the issue of acquiring Consumer Rights.
It further urged the public to start fighting for their consumer rights and spread awareness amongst them.
