Landslide kills 10 in Lunglei town

Newmai News Network Aizawl | June 5   In a tragic incident in Mizoram, at least 10 people, including 5 children, were killed and 4 others injured when a semi-pucca building that housed two families was swept away by massive landslide caused by heavy rains in south Mizoram on Monday evening.   Police said that the calamity occurred at Lunglawn area in Lunglei town at around 6: 40 pm on Monday when the occupants of the building were about to go for a church service, the police sources added.   According to reports, the building belonged to one Vanlalpeka who lived with his six other family members on the first floor, while the ground floor was occupied by his father-in-law Thatlina, who lived with his wife and five other relatives.   All the seven family members of Thatlina were killed in the incident while the rest of the deceased were from the first floor.   The rescue operation was carried out by personnel of Disaster Rapid Force, personnel of Assam Rifles and BSF, police and local volunteers.   The reports added that all the dead bodies have been recovered today.   Meanwhile, the State government has announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the victims.
