Viewing the viability of Zanthoxylum cultivation in the area, an entrepreneur Vetsulhu Medeo has taken up Zanthoxylum project on commercial scale at Runguzu Nawu in Phek district. This project is supported by Nagaland Bio-Resource Mission (NBRM) under the state’s land resources development.
His Zanthoxylum farm spreading around 10 ha. is one of the largest Zanthoxylum cultivation projects in Nagaland. Medeo is expecting a good harvest within a year or two. He also own Zanthoxylum nursery, wherein he started sending seedlings to Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Wokha and Phek districts. His nursery is expected to produce 50,000 seedlings for which he is making necessary arrangement to make it available to the various parts of the state. Medeo said Michingna is a regular spice item in Naga cuisine. It has a lot of demand but large scale commercial production is yet to see the light of the day. In this, he expressed his desire to intensify and popularize Zanthoxylum cultivation through his farm and at the same time encouraged the farming community to take up the same on commercial scale. On market scope and demand for Michingna in the state, he was optimistic that Zanthoxylum cultivation will boost the rural economy.
Recently, the villagers of Runguzu Nawu undertook a social work in his farm, and pleased by his commitment and sincere effort in undertaking Zanthoxylum cultivation in a successful manner.
