Lemsachenlok conservation efforts wins India Biodiversity Awards 2018

Lemsachenlok Society of Yaongyimchen village under Longleng district won the much coveted India Biodiversity Awards 2018 for Conservation of Wildlife Species under Institution category on Monday.  

The Conservation of Wildlife Species award is a sub-category under the Conservation category and is presented to individuals and institution working for the conservation, management and restoration of wild species and their habitats.  

Governonr of Telangana, E. S. L. Narasimhan presented the award to Y Nuklu Phom, former Executive Secretary, Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA), who is also the chairman of Lemsachenlok at Prof. Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) Auditorium in Hyderabad.  

India Biodiversity Award takes place once every two years and this year’s Award celebration commemorated with the International Day for Biological Diversity 2018 which was held under the theme “Celebrating 25 years of Action for Biodiversity.”  

The Award has been instituted by the Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in association with UNDP India.  

Under the shadows of rampant hunting and deforestation, Yaongyimchen Community Biodiversity Conservation Society Lemsachenlok took up community biodiversity conservation initiatives from 2008 and since then, hundreds of endangered wild species has returned to the conserved areas.  

One of the most notable success stories in the community conservation efforts has been the roosting of the Amur Falcons which has seen an increase in recent years. In the last 2-3 years, more than ten Lakhs Amur Falcons have been roosting in the Yaongyimchen Community Biodiversity Area.  

An elated Nuklu Phom, speaking to The Morung Express after receiving the award said the biodiversity conservation initiative of Yaongyimchen community is a small contribution to the global world and gives asylum to many different endangered species.  

“On behalf of the community I wish to thank the Government of Nagaland especially the department of forest and wildlife for recommending Yaongyimchen. I also thank the Longleng district administration (former and present officers) for its support in the campaign, the Phom People’s Councils and all the civil societies who were part of the program organized in Yaongyimchen,” Nuklu said.  

He also expressed gratitude to Wildlife Institute Dehradun for all the initiatives.
