Leukemia patient passes away

Dimapur, September 2 (MExN): The student suffering from Leukemia in Hyderabad, for whom an appeal was floated yesterday for urgent financial help, has passed away, last night itself. Haireisim Newme was a scholar pursuing research in the Department of Comparative and Applied Linguistics, University of Hyderabad when he was diagnosed with blood cancer.

An appeal was received here from Hyderabad yesterday for Newme who was said to be without a family. A well-wisher who sent an email requesting for help on the deceased’s behalf, said Newme was an orphan, and the only guardian he had, an uncle, passed away a year ago. “In short, there is no one to look after him,” the email had stated.

The mortal remains will be arriving from Kolkata on September 3, at 3PM at Dimapur Airport where a brief prayer programme will also be held. All well-wishers are requested to reach the airport at 2 PM sharp.

Published yesterday in this paper, the appeal received heartening responses from well-wishers including from Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Minister for Animal Husbandry TR Zeliang. Sadly, Newme passed away last night itself before he was to be shifted to the National Institute of Medical Sciences for intensive treatment.

All who responded to the time of need are deeply thanked by the friends and well-wishers of the departed student. However, help in both kind and cash is still needed to meet expenses for and before his mortal remains are brought home. Joint Secretary to the Government of Nagaland Raj K Verma also sent a message today. “I am sorry to have to tell you that Hairiesim had just passed away before he could be treated at NIMS. Your contributions will still help in meeting the expenses. Please join the students in praying for the peaceful repose of his soul. God bless,” the official stated.

Earlier, according to an email from well-wisher Wabang Longchar, Newme was taken into the Intensive Care Unit at Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. It was informed that to keep him in the ICU, the hospital charges Rs. 25,000 per day and huge resources were understood to be the urgent need to save Newme. His leukemia was then informed to have reached stage-4 and part of his brain was already damaged.

The Morung Express is deeply grateful and expresses our gratitude to our readers and well-wishers for responding to the appeal for financial assistance and prayers for late Haireisim Newme, who passed away September 1 in Hyderabad.
