KOHIMA (MExN): In a first of its kind in Nagaland, and perhaps in India, the Phek Town Council (PTC) has insisted on the Phek town dwellers to use only tube light and fluorescent light bulbs with an immediate effect. The move has been mooted to save electricity.

“The town dwellers have started to install the tube light in their homes,” said PTC chairperson Kupota Khesoh with note of excitement.

Talking to The Morung Express, Khesoh said the Council would soon issue blanket ban on the sale of other light bulbs like 100 or 200 volt within Phek Town.

The town dwellers have been directed to use the tube light compulsorily, he said.

The Council has set December 15 as the deadline for the entire households in the town to respond to the directive.

Khesoh was optimistic that the use of tube light would cut down on the electricity bills as it consumes lesser power. The new move, he said would also decrease the frequent load shedding problem at Phek.

So far, the Council has received overwhelming response from the town dwellers, Khesoh said. Further, he made a fervent appeal to the denizen to give their co-operation and translate the task into a reality. “It is a welcome step as the light bills would come down,” said Nukuta Chizo, General Secretary, Phek VDB Block Union.

Meanwhile, tube light manufacturers and retailers are expected to do a brisk business at Phek town.
