LKM takes serious note of haphazard and unscientific coal mining

Various other resolutions passed during its 31st Session at Tuli

Dimapur, January 16 (MExN): Taking serious note of present “haphazard, unscientific and mindless way” of coal mining in Langpangkong area in particular and Nagaland as a whole, the LKM has decided to organize a seminar on ‘Present Coal mining and its Consequences’ with experts at the earliest.  

“It threatens the ecological balance and also endangering lives and geographical foundations of villages, LKM said in a resolution.  

The resolution was among the many others resolved during its recent 31st conference-cum-sports meet at Tuli which were released to media today.

The Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (LKM) or the Langpangkong Students’ Conference is the apex students’ body in Langpangkong Range, one of the ranges inhabited by the Aos in Mokokchung district.  

The LKM also decided to seek the reasons behind the inability of the Tuli Paper Mill (NPPC) for revival by Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd despite availability of fund from the Govt of India.  

“If HPC found to be not interested in reviving the mill, the LKM shall reclaim the land meant for NPPC Ltd for alternative developmental project for the benefit of the people” it said.  

The concept of “Special Development Zone” mooted by Nagaland government also gets its attention and it would initiate a ‘Talk’ on concept of “Special Development Zone” in Nagaland to put the concept in proper perspective without jeopardizing the rights of the people and translate the concept into reality for the benefit of Nagaland.  

The LKM further resolved to give its best effort in educating people to ensure fair and free election in the range as well as the state.  

While resolving to form a Trust and register it accordingly to serve the needs of the people through different channels, the LKM further passed resolution to organize a Farmers Consultative Meet with agri-allied departments to encourage, promote and practice farming culture in more productive ways, the LKM shall.  

The formation of Fund Raising cum Construction Committee was passed for construction of LKM Commercial building in its plot of land at Changtongya Town in 2016.  

In the educational front, the conference has decided to constitute a ‘Research and Evaluation Committee’ to assess the academic and physical performance and status of schools and suggest remedial measures to improve the dismal academic situation in both the private and Govt schools particularly in Langpangkong area.  

It will also establish a award known as “LL Yaden Meritorious Scholarship” for topper amongst the successful candidates of HSLC examination from Govt High Schools amongst its members from 2016.  

Geoffrey Yaden and family are sponsoring the scholarship in memory of his father, Late LL Yaden, the first President of LKM.  

The LKM shall also form a “Think Tank” to guide and assist the LKM and take an initiative to establish a Skill Development Center and also to construct a multipurpose complex in Tuli with the support of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.  

In the sports arena, the LKM has decided to set up a Langpangkong football team as well as Volleyball team to broaden the participation scope of players in national and international events.  

A prize money of Rs. 1.00 lakh for football winning team and Rs.50,000/- for Runner-up and Rs.50,000/- for Volleyball winning team and Rs.25,000/- for runner-up along with the current trophies was also passed in the conference.  

An annual Youth & Sports Festival in Tuli in collaboration with public and private agencies was also mooted.
