The sports events of the 32nd Langpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (LKM) triennial general conference cum tournament concluded this afternoon with an exciting football final (Boys) between Chuchuyimlang and Merangkong village.
The final match at P Talitemjen Ao Ground, Akhoya was packed to capacity, with supporters from both the villages and other onlookers flocking to the ground to root for their team.
The final did not disappoint and kicked off to a scintillating start with Merangkong scoring a goal within 2 minutes of the match.
Merangkong managed to hold on to the solitary goal advantage till the end of the first half but Chuchuyimlang equalized just before the break, to the delight of their supporters.
When the match resume in the second half, the defending champions Merangkong dominated the proceedings but could not find the target again.
Chuchuyimlang’s custodian made several saves to deny another goal to Merangkong, and eventually, the match ended in a draw and went into tie-breaker.
Merangkong, however, outclassed the opponent in the penalty shoot-out with a 3-1 scoreline. With the win, Merangkong was declared as the overall champions of the tournament.
The brief closing ceremony was graced by Toshi Wungtung, Advisor & MLA for IPR, SCERT, Village Guard and Chairman, DPDB Tuensang while Temjen Paul, convenor local planning committee Akhoya addressed the gathering with a welcome note.
Earlier, a nostalgic veteran exhibition match was played between Langpangkong Veteran XI and Bendangli veteran XI team, which the latter won 2-0.
On January 10, Changtongya defeated Changtongyayimsen in the final to emerge as the champions of volleyball (Boys) while the Merangkong Girls’ volleyball team took home the title after defeating Salulamang.
Participants from 19 LKM units took part in the four-day conference and sports tournament held under the theme, “Bond of Integrity” from January 8-11.
