Longleng observes World Malaria Day, holds district task force meeting

Longleng, April 26 (MExN): World Malaria Day was observed in Longleng on April 25, 2026, with the District Task Force (DTF) for malaria elimination meeting held at the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Conference Hall. The programme was organised by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme under the Chief Medical Officer’s Office, Longleng.

Speaking on the occasion, P Pukha Lam, SDO (Civil), Longleng, appreciated the District Vector Borne Officer and staff for their efforts and performance in malaria surveillance, prevention and progress towards malaria elimination in the district.

He emphasised the importance of community participation and called upon line departments, NGOs and civil society organisations to actively engage in awareness drives, cleanliness campaigns and promotion of proper mosquito net usage. He also urged the gathering to educate the public on malaria prevention and eradication.

Dr K Manan Phom, DVBO (NVBDCP), Longleng, in a presentation highlighted the significance of the day, reviewed the malaria programme, and shared the current status of malaria cases in the district. He also spoke on source reduction and the role of the District Task Force in advocacy, coordination and partnership.

He stated that India aims to eliminate malaria by 2030, with an intermediate target of zero indigenous cases by 2027, through key strategies such as surveillance and response, vector control, case management and community participation. He further informed that NVBDCP Longleng has been conducting awareness and fever screening activities in health units, schools, villages and among migrant workers in the district.

Malaria Expert Committee member Dr Joshua shared details on malaria treatment, testing and elimination.

The programme was chaired by A Nyumoi Phom, Consultant NVBDCP, while the invocation was led by Longting, SW.

As part of the observance, programmes were also conducted at all block levels from April 20 to 24 under the theme “Drive to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.” Awareness was spread on malaria prevention, early diagnosis, use of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs), maintaining clean surroundings and seeking timely treatment. Fever screening and house-to-house visits to check LLIN usage were also carried out.

The event concluded with the NVBDCP district review meeting.
