Longleng, August 3 (MExN): Emphasising the urgent need for sustainable water management in water-stressed regions, the Longleng Town Council on August 3, organised an awareness programme on rainwater harvesting and water conservation under the nationwide ‘Jal Sanchay Jal Bhagidari’ (JSJB) campaign.
Held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall here on the theme ‘Catch the Rain’, the event underscored the critical challenges facing the district, where a large section of the population depends on rainwater and spring sources for its water needs, according to a DIPR report.
Resource person and Junior Engineer from the PHED, Er L Baukham Phom, highlighted that hilltop settlements, drying springs, seasonal depletion during winter, climate variability and inadequate storage facilities are major causes of water scarcity in Longleng. He stressed that these challenges necessitate collective efforts and sustainable practices.
He called upon citizens to actively participate in conservation by installing rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, keeping drains clean, planting trees, protecting local water bodies, and adopting responsible water-use habits. He also urged proper maintenance of water bodies, increasing forest cover, and implementing spring-shed management and check dams to enhance groundwater recharge.
The programme began with a welcome address by Additional Deputy Commissioner Longleng, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, NCS, who also chaired the session and briefly spoke on the importance of rainwater harvesting. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by EAC Sardar, Er Vinho Swu.
