DIMAPUR, MAY 15 (DIPR): The inaugural function of the Upgraded District Water Testing Laboratory (UDWTL) near PWD office, Dimapur was held today where Minister for PHED, P Longon graced the occasion as the chief guest.
P Longon, while delivering his speech, said that the upgradation facility in the existing District Water Testing Laboratory at Dimapur was through 100% financial assistance provided by the Government of India, Department of Drinking Water Supply. He expressed his gratitude to the Government of India and the Union Minister for RD, Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh for providing the facility to the state.
Longon also highlighted that the main objective of the National Rural Drinking Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance Programme is to institutionalize community participation in drinking water quality management and surveillance to ensure that quality monitoring is made at the village level by the villagers on a sustainable basis for good community health. He also said that villagers should be educated so that they consume only boiled water which is the most simple and traditional way of disinfecting drinking water supply. He further expressed his hope that the upgradation of the existing water testing laboratory will enable carrying out of all other required activities on issues related to water quality monitoring and surveillance, thereby bringing about a marked improvement in the health of the people.
Zhaleo Rio, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, PHED in his speech said that this upgradation project has been taken up first in Dimapur as the district is situated in the foothills, prone to contamination. He also said that the PHE Department has further approached the central Government to set up such kind of projects in every district of the state with efficient technicians to provide quality and safe drinking water which will go a long way in preventing water-borne diseases.
Er. K. Khetovi Sumi, Chief Engineer, PHED stressed on the importance of the Upgraded Water Testing Laboratory. Vipul Trivedi, CEO, Tranchem Agritech Ltd., Vadodara, spoke on the concept of the laboratory and vote of thanks was given by K.G. Sumi, Senior Engineer, PHED. The programme was chaired by Er. Kevisekho Kruse, Executive Director, CCDU (PHED) who also gave a report on the installation of the laboratory.
