The Lotha Youth Hoho (LYH) organised a penalty shootout under the theme “Shoot Goal, Not Drugs” at the Public Ground, Wokha, on September 19, bringing together 80 male and female teams from different parts of the district.
The event sought to promote sports as a positive avenue for young people while creating awareness on the dangers of drug abuse.
The S Lotha Team emerged victorious, while Restoring FC finished runners-up. Shancho of the S Lotha Team was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper, and Lipio Ezung of Restoring FC was named Best Shooter.
Speaking as the special guest, Joseph Lotha, Kilo Secretary, NSCN (IM), highlighted the growing concern over drug abuse among youths in Wokha. He said the district was among those seriously affected by the problem, with many young people falling into addiction.
Calling upon young people to channel their energy and abilities towards constructive activities, Joseph encouraged the LYH to continue its efforts while working within the established law and order framework.
District Welfare Officer James Ezung, who delivered the theme address, urged participants to carry the message of the programme beyond the one-day event and apply it in their everyday lives.
He encouraged youths to choose their company carefully and make constructive use of their knowledge, energy and capabilities to contribute towards positive change in the district.
Meanwhile, WDSA President and MSME (PCI) Chairman Yanrenthung Humtsoe spoke on the role of sports in youth development. He observed that sports had received increased attention in recent years and encouraged participants to cultivate discipline, determination and team spirit through sporting activities.
