‘No short cut’: Justice HK Sema
Justice HK Sema, who also addressed the gathering, exhorted the gathered lawyers that there is no short cut to become a successful lawyer except for hard work.
Justice Sema, who is the first Supreme Court Judge from the Nagaland, walked down memory lane to bring his point to target.
He narrated his younger days when he first entered the profession way back in the early seventies. He said that during that time there were no vehicles except for rickshaws to travel to the courts, and that when he moved early in the morning to work, he met only stray dogs and drunkards. He said thatat one point of time, he nearly gave up when he could not bear the frustrations in his life as a lawyer because of his difficulties.
However, he said that the upcoming young lawyers nowadays are not facing the same problem he had faced. Standing on it, Justice Sema told the lawyers that if he could overcome his difficulties and become a successful lawyer; then the young Naga lawyers can also do it, he challenged. However, Justice Sema, pragmatically reminded that there is no short cut in the profession as a lawyer and that there is no way out to become a successful lawyer except for hard work.
Justice Sema also exhorted the gathering never to lose the ‘court’ while dealing with their cases and clients.
Narrating the words of one of his mentors during the early days of his lie as a lawyer, Justice Sema said that when the court gives biased or supports or gives wrong judgment, then it is not only losing the case but also losing the ‘court’, the Supreme Court Judge was apparently implying and calling for integrity of the lawyer and respect of the judiciary from the lawyers.
