Aizawl, November 19 (MExN): Major General Ranjit Singh, VSM assumed office as the Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) on November 18. 

Major General GAV Reddy, SC VSM handed over the reins of IGAR (E) to Major Gen Singh who would be the sixth incumbent in Srikona Garrison, Silchar, a press release from 23 Sector Assam Rifles informed. 

He was been handpicked for the appointment, it said. 

IGAR (East) looks after Tripura, Mizoram, South Assam and West Manipur and is involved in multi ferrous roles “like counter insurgency operations in West Manipur, effective border management in Mizoram and civic action projects in the entire region to win over the hearts and minds of people,” it added. 

As per the release, Major Gen Singh has vast operational experience in “counter insurgency operations and most difficult terrains across the country”. He commanded the 7th Battalion of the Madras Regiment in Tinsukia, Binaguri and 56 Mountain Brigade in Dras / Kargil - which was famous for the 1999 Kargil War, it informed. 

He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for his service as a Brigade Commander and has served earlier in Mokokchung, Tinsukia and Rangiya.

“Assam Rifles under his able leadership and guidance is likely to contribute substantially towards ushering in peace, prosperity and stability in the North East region,” the release added.
