Make consumer awareness a mass movement: NVCO head

Dimapur, March 18 (MExN): The Nagaland Voluntary Consumer Organisation President, Kezhokhoto Savi has called upon the people to make consumer awareness a mass movement during his speech at the World Consumer Rights Day celebration at Mokokchung Town Hall on March 15 last.

Kezhokhoto Savi in his speech said that awareness on consumer rights is still lacking in the state and for that everyone of us is responsible to make consumer movement a mass movement, stated a press release jointly issued by the NVCO Secretary, Mhashesel and NVCO Executive Members Meren Jamir and Yanpothung.

Pointing out the aliments of consumer awareness, the release stated that the NVCO president said that the most important role that the state government has been failing is to convene a meeting of the state consumer protection council which has not been done till date, though the Nagaland Chief Minister is currently the chairman of the SCPC.

The State Consumer Protection Council (SCPC) and the District Consumer Protection Council (DCPC), has been constituted with the objective to promote and protect the rights of the consumers but the state government has miserably failed to put into practice, the release stated.

The NVCO president said that he finds most of the Deputy Commissioners in each district is not much aware about his or her responsibility as the chairperson of the DCPC, the release stated.

In this regard, the NVCO president requested the Mokokchung DC to immediately constitute the Mokokchung DCPC by involving representatives from the student community, public organisations, women organization, etc, the release added.

The World Consumer rights Day, was jointly organized by the Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Nagaland Voluntary Consumer Organisation (NVCO), Mokokchung District Consumer Protection Council (MDCPC) and Mokokchung and Mokokchung District Voluntary Consumer Organisation (MDVCO). The theme of the programme this year’s world consumer rights day was ‘Empowerment of consumer-Assert rights, pursue remedies’.

The function, which was held at Mokokchung Town Hall on March 15, was graced by Mokokchung DC Abhishek Singh as the chief guest, while the Advocate and NVCO President, Kezhokhoto Savi, Rtd Deputy LM&CP M Imie Ao, were the main resource persons, the release further added.
