Makeshift fruit stalls vandalized in Imphal

Fruit sellers try to salvage the fruits after JCILPS volunteers vandalized their makeshift stalls on May 2 in Imphal.
IMPHAL, MAY 2 (NNN): The student wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) vandalised makeshift fruit stalls in Dharamsala area, Thangal Bazar in the heart of Imphal today.   On April 25, S Memcha, Convenor of Women Wing of JCILPS had accused the State government of allowing certain people to set up roadside stalls illegally in Thangal Bazar while “police continue to harass 'local people' for selling goods in the roadsides.”   Manjit Sarangthem, convenor, student wing of JCILPS had stated few days ago that certain people were doing their business around the Bhairodan Maxwell School area of Thangal Bazar for the last 30-40 years.   As many as 25 makeshift fruit stalls were set up in this busy roadside.   Today’s incident occurred around 12:30 pm. Some JCILPS volunteers numbering about 30-40 came from different directions and converged at Dharamsala and started destroying the makeshift fruit stalls. The police tried to stop the act but they could not foil it. However, police detained as many as 28 JCILPS volunteers, including Manjit Sarangthem.   It was not clear whether the JCILPS volunteers have been released.
