Man commits suicide inside Women Cell lockup

Dimapur, June 20 (MExN): A 45-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself from a ventilator in the lockup of Dimapur Women Cell this morning, June 20. The body was found at around 10:45 am. On finding the body temperature still warm, the women police personnel hurriedly brought down the body but the victim was already dead. The victim was identified as one Shyam Alley.  The police have registered the case as an unnatural death at East Police Station Dimapur.

The reason behind the victim committing suicide was likely out of guilt. According to the account given by the Additional Superintendent of Police Dimapur S Wati Jamir said that on June 18, the Government Railway Police Station (GRPS) personnel received information that a drunkard lying on the railway tracks near Rail Bazaar. The accused “was not himself” so he was kept in the GRPS ‘thana’ for the night.

In the following morning, the wife of the accused one Bopita Alley accompanied by the Y Zhimo Colony secretary reached the GRPS alongwith an FIR stating that her husband has been torturing her physically and mentally since the last 3-years. However, the GRPS officials redirected the FIR alongwith the accused to Suburban Police Station since the case was not under their jurisdiction.

Also, the Suburban Police Station on finding that the offence falls under Domestic Violence Act redirected the FIR and the accused to Dimapur Women Cell. 

The accused one Shyam Alley was produced at the Dimapur Women Cell at around 10:15 am, where the duty officer conducted preliminary examination and recorded statement of the accused, after which the accused was kept the lockup at 10:30 am. 
The complainant reached the Women Cell to record her statement at 10:45 am, to which the duty officer sent for the accused to be brought from the lockup for cross examination.  However, the accused was found dead.

The Additional SP also informed that the case was immediately reported to the superior officers so that necessary legal formalities are conducted. Inquest of the body was conducted by the Executive Magistrate in the presence of independent witness, which was video recorded by the Forensic Team. Later the body was taken to the Dimapur District Hospital for post-mortem. Three doctors carried out the post-mortem, which was also recorded by the Forensic Team. The post-mortem report is still awaited.
