The ruling BJP in Manipur has opened its account even before the November 7 bye-elections to the five Assembly constituencies.

An independent candidate who filed his nomination paper from the Singhat assembly constituency in Churachandpur district has withdrawn his candidature on Thursday.

Only two candidates - Ginsuanhau of BJP and independent candidate Chinlunthang filed their nomination papers in this constituency.

However, reports said the returning officer (RO) of the constituency on Thursday received a letter of nomination paper withdrawal from the independent candidate.

As October 23 is the last day for withdrawing the nomination papers, the BJP candidate is likely to be declared elected uncontested after the closure of the withdrawal of nomination papers.

Ginsuanhau who was elected on Congress ticket in 2017 assembly elections resigned from the state Assembly on August 10 last and joined the BJP.

This time, Congress did not field its candidate in the constituency, however, it announced that the party would support a "like-minded" candidate or party fielding candidate in this constituency.
