President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Nameirakpam Loken Singh tendered his resignation today. “Taking responsibility of major defeat of the candidates of Indian National Congress (INC) in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election, 2022, I do hereby submit my resignation... on moral ground with immediate effect,” Loken stated in his resignation paper furnished to the AICC president Sonia Gandhi.
He was appointed as the president of the MPCC in October 2021 which was lying vacant after Govindas Konthoujam resigned from the post before he joined the BJP. Konthoujam resigned from MPCC president as well as from being a member of the state Assembly before he jumped the political ship to BJP. Before assuming office as MPCC chief, Loken discharged as acting president after Govindas Konthoujam tendered resigned.
The Congress suffered a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded elections to the 60-seat Manipur Legislative Assembly. The party secured only five seats against 28 it had won in 2017 elections.
In the recently concluded elections, not only winning in five seats, many senior leaders of the Congress party in Manipur including Loken himself lost the elections.
Loken who occupied the Nambol assembly constituency for five consecutive terms was defeated by BJP candidate Thounaojam Basantakumar, a cop turned politician.
Loken’s resignation as MPCC president came barely a day after AICC Sonia Gandhi cracked whips asking the presidents of PCCs of five states- Punjab, UP, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa to resign.
The party suffered setbacks in all these five states and the AICC chief asked them to tender resignations to enable reorganization of the party.
