Manipur govt on media welfare schemes

The State Government of Manipur has said that it will continue with its efforts for the well being of the media fraternity in Manipur through various welfare programme and schemes. Manipur IPR Minister, Th Bishwajit Singh told the assembly today.


Replying to the query raised by Surjakumar Okram, the minister said that keeping in mind the need for financial assistance by the media persons in times of need on urgent basis, the State Government had already kept ten (10) crore as Corpus Fund under the Manipur State Journalists Welfare Scheme.


Under the scheme, financial assistance is being provided to journalists and their families under various categories. He also said that the Government will consider increasing amount of the financial assistance provided to the working journalists in case of sudden demise of the journalists. Under the welfare scheme, journalists and hawkers are covered providing free medical assistance.


Under the Manipur State Journalists Pension Scheme, retired journalists are given monthly pension of rupees four thousand only and rupees two thousand only as family pension, the IPR minister said.


He added that there is also a proposal to increase the pension amount to rupees ten thousand and rupees five thousand for journalists and family pension respectively.


The area for establishment of Media Park has been earmarked at Langjing Achouba in Imphal West district and land allotment is under process, he added.
