Manipur: Locals protest firing at staff of Air India

Suspected militants threatened family members of a staff member of Air India by firing guns after intruding into the house at Pheidinga under Sekmai police station of Imphal West district on Friday night. Locals registered a strong condemnation by staging a sit-in-protest in the locality on Saturday.

Reports said that two unidentified gunmen intruded into the house of Haobijam Napoleon , an assistant officer in Air India  currently posted at Imphal International Airport, at Pheidinga last night, around 8 pm. According to the family members, the two unidentified persons first asked if Napoleon was at home while accusing him of involving in the import of betel leaves by air.

Bimola Devi, wife of Napoleon said that the duo strongly charged her husband behind a consignment of 16 bags of betel leaves that arrived at the Imphal airport recently. The duo alleged that the betel leaves were being transported by air with the permission of her husband and he should pay Rs 50,000 per bag to them within 15 days.

While asking to pay the amount, the duo identified them as to be members of a militant outfit.

While leaving the house, the two men fired three rounds of gun at the kitchen of the house where she was preparing tdinner. However, none of the family members sustained injuries, she added.

Denouncing the gun firing inside a house, locals of Pheidinga today staged a sit-in protest at Pheidinga Bazar.
The protesters alleged that the firing incident had disturbed the peace and tranquility of the area.
