Manipur: Students confront police outside Assembly

    Newmai News Network Imphal | July 27 The Police in Imphal today had a hard time trying to foil the attempts by large number students to enter the Manipur Legislative Assembly, currently in session. The students were demanding the passing of a Bill in the Assembly regarding the Constitutional Protection and seat reservation for Indigenous people. As a result, students from various schools and colleges had altercations with the police in the vicinity of the Assembly building. While large number students were seen coming from the northern side were barred at Chingmeirong area around 11 am, the police personnel were seen persuading the student leaders to go back to their respective institutions and somehow they could not proceed beyond the Post. However, things became tense when the students of Imphal College attempted to enter the premises of the Assembly. The police locked the gates of the Assembly building as they engaged in scuffles with the students. After about 30 minutes of altercation, the situation was brought under control.
