Market closed in protest against youth killing

Newmai News Network Imphal | March 18   All shops owned by non-Manipuris in Thangal bazaar in Imphal remained closed on Saturday in protest against killing of a youth from Khurai Telipatti in Imphal East.   Ajay Kumar Sahu, 24, was found shot to death yesterday morning on a road side near Langol village under Lamphel Police Station. The deceased, a pan shop owner, was originally from Bihar.   A joint action committee (JAC) organised a sit-in protest at Telipatti demanding justice in the killing of the youth. “We want the government to give compensation of Rs 20 lakh and a government job to the next of kin,” the JAC president Sitaram Sahu told media on the sidelines of the demonstration.   “All culprits should be brought to book within three days. The body now lying in the mortuary will not be claimed until the the government fulfills all demands,” Sitaram demanded.   He said the government should own up responsibility for the death of the youth and that all steps be taken to stop such incidents in future.   Sitaram said, “Non-Manipuris are now scared of such attacks and they have stopped going outside.” A large number of protesters also blocked the Khurai-Telipatti road under Porompat Police Station in protest against the killing yesterday.   Sources said, the deceased had left home on March 16 around 6 pm to collect betel leaves for his pan shop until he was found shot to death on Friday around 6 am.
