
‘He was more popular among the Nagas than his own community’
Dimapur, August 24 (MExn): President of Dimapur Chamber of Commerce Mangilal Jain, who is also the president of Nagaland Marwari Samaj has passed away today, August 24 at 12:12 pm at Delhi after a short period of illness. He was 79 and is survived by his wife Maina Devi, three sons, two daughters and seven grandchildren. The senior citizen’s funeral service will be held at his residence near Jain Temple in Dimapur on August 25, 1:30 pm.
Late Mangilal Jain was born on June 26, 1933 and his family members were one of the early Marwari settlers in Nagaland. His grandfather late Sadaram left Rajasthan and came to Nagaland in 1856 and started a business firm under the name Messrs. Following his grandfather’s footstep, late Mangilal Jain also established a business firm under the name M/S Nandal Mangilal jain in 1940s.
According to the profile provided to media by Ajay Sethi, late Mangilal Jain served Naga Society in various capacities. He served as vice chairman of Dimapur Town Committee in early 70s. He was also the chairman of Ramakrishna Mission Society of Nagaland and treasurer of Dimapur College. Member of Kohima District Level Integration Committee, Dimapur Area Council, Postal Level Integration Committee of NE Circle, State level Consumer Forum of Nagaland and Telecom Advisory Committee for Nagaland. Recently, he was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at Dimapur Expo held under the aegis of Government of Nagaland.
In a separate note, the Nagaland Marwari Samaj has expressed its grief over the demise of late Mangilal. The note stated that he was one of the architects of Marwari Society in Nagaland and a major contributor in the field of health and education - A noted social worker and prominent businessman, “he was more popular among the Nagas than his community”.
The note also stated: “...it has left a vacuum in the heart of Marwari Society of Nagaland. His popularity among his Naga friends was always known to all of us but we are more surprised by the nature of calls we are getting from the Senior Naga Citizens confirming about his demise.”
