As part of the ‘swachhata hi seva’ campaign in Mokokchung, a mass cleanliness drive was organized in Mokokchung town by the Mokokchung Municipal Council in partnership with the respective ward authorities in the municipality on September 28.

The cleanliness drive today, unlike in the past, was organized with special focus on clearing and cleaning of drains and streams and collection of plastic wastes. The cleanliness drive was conducted in all the 18 wards under the Mokokchung Municipal Council.

Later in the day, a seminar on “sensitization and awareness programme on waste management” was conducted in all the wards simultaneously. Housewives and womenfolk were the attendees of the seminar with resource persons drawn from Clean Mokokchung Campaign, Run Mokokchung, Young Women Christian Association of Mokokchung and Kabur Telok.

Distribution of two waste bins to each household of the 18 wards to encourage waste segregation at source was another feature of the drive today. The waste bins were sponsored by Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), Nagaland. It may be mentioned that there are about 9000 households in the municipality as per MMC data.

Expressing profound satisfaction, ADC & Administrator of MMC, W Manpai Phom said that about 10,000 women representing their households attended the seminar today where more than 500 turned up for the seminar in most of the wards. He also thanked the respective ward authorities for their cooperation and initiatives while also thanking the resource persons. He also said that the plastic wastes collected today would be stocked at the MRF (Material Recovery Facility). He added that collection of plastic wastes is an ongoing initiative of the MMC and that it would continue beyond the “swachhata hi seva” campaign.

Weekly collection of plastic wastes would be done in each of the wards where recyclable ones would be bought by plastic dealers at Rs.5 per kilo and the discarded ones would be stored at the MRF for further action, he added. “Any and every plastic wastes will be collected at the household level. The motive is to discourage rampant use of plastics, to minimize its use and to manage its proper disposal,” he clarified.
