Mass funeral held for 2 missing Mon landslide victims

Mon, July 26 (MExN): A mass funeral service for the two missing persons was held on Saturday at Thamnan Ward in Mon town in the presence of Advisor Wangpang Konyak, Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, Superintendent of Police Kanchan Kumar Kandpal, representatives of the Konyak Union, Konyak Students' Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, ward members, villagers and the victims' family members.

Speaking on behalf of the district administration, the Deputy Commissioner conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and acknowledged the efforts made by all agencies and volunteers involved in the search operation.

He expressed gratitude to the nine elected representatives of Mon district and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak for their financial and moral support during the rescue efforts.

The Deputy Commissioner also thanked the Konyak Union, Konyak Students' Union, government officials from various departments, volunteers and others for their cooperation and tireless efforts during the six-day search operation.

Representatives of the Konyak Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, Konyak Students' Union, Thamnan Ward, the village authorities and the bereaved families also addressed the gathering during the funeral service. 

According to a DIPR update, authorities called off the search operation for two persons who remained missing after a landslide struck Defence Colony in Nagaland's Mon district on July 19, claiming eight lives.

The search and rescue operation continued for six consecutive days but failed to recover the bodies of the two missing persons. The operation was officially called off on Friday evening.
