MCD concerned over circulation of fake news

Flays irresponsible act of some regional, national media agencies

Dimapur, October 14 (MExN): The Muslim Council Dimapur (MCD) today expressed serious concern over “the recent fake news being circulated in the social media about the possible attack upon Nagas in Nagaland by Rohingya Militants.”

It was published by the regional print media and portals and more importantly the news was carried by the Noida- based TV Channel and a national the news agency, which is widely believed to be its main source, stated the MCD in a press release from its Working President A. Rahman.

The widely circulated ‘news,’ among others, stated that 20 ISIS members have entered Nagaland and 2000 Muslim volunteers has agreed to take up arms against the Nagas and a local Imam has started collecting funds for buying arms.”

Citing “the intelligence wing of Nagaland police,” the news further stipulated that “suicide bombs attacks are likely to be carried out throughout Nagaland.”

“The religious Idgah Committee Dimapur has already clarified in the local dailies about the Imam and the allegations and the police also denied any such matter,” the council said in the release.

Condemning the “the irresponsible act of some regional and national media agencies,” it also “politely requested them to rectify their mistake through the same process by which this serious mistake was committed.”

“The MCD may not fail to take the help of the law if the request is not honoured,” it added.

The council also appealed to the law enforcing agencies to trace the anti social elements involved in creating such fake news which is aimed at “creating social disorders and enmity among the citizens thereby bringing bad name to the state of Nagaland.”

Meanwhile, the MCD lauded that the local media houses in Nagaland “for their responsible journalism by not publishing such unverified and fake news.”

It further appreciated the composure displayed by the citizens of Nagaland in digesting the “fake news” and also sought “guidance and co-operation from all to streamline the Muslim community of Dimapur to maintain peace and harmony.”
