The Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA), under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority, organized an awareness program titled “A Program on Child-Friendly Legal Services” on July 29, at the Observation Home, Mokokchung Town.
Dr. Amongla, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Mokokchung, was the first resource person to speak. She emphasized ensuring children’s rights and valuing their dignity, highlighting that child rights are human rights. She also discussed the difference between children’s needs and rights.
Julian Sitlhou, Secretary of the Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority, gave a special address on the theme. She highlighted the schemes of the NLSA and the changes it has brought to children’s rights. Sitlhou referenced several articles, including Article 14, Article 21, Article 21(A), and Article 51(A)(K), which address children’s needs. Additionally, she discussed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Sitlhou emphasized the importance of organizing awareness programs for village and ward councils to sensitize them about child rights and correctional measures. Her address also included points on handling children who are offenders, or “children in conflict with the law.”
Purnungsang Jamir, a member of the Juvenile Justice Board, spoke about juvenile justice rights based on the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. He addressed issues such as child labor, children in conflict with the law, corporal punishment, and offenses against children with disabilities (CwD).
Tajungla Lkr, a panel lawyer, shared information on the schemes of the NLSA, pointing out ten points where individuals fitting certain criteria can avail themselves of these services.
The awareness program concluded with a fruitful discussion hour, during which participants engaged in discourses on various situations related to children.
The program was attended by representatives from the Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA), the Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), the Juvenile Justice Board, the Observation Home, the Child Welfare Committee, and Childline Mokokchung.
