Medziphema public appeals to factions

Dimapur, March 4 (MExN): In Medziphema, the scapegoat for the past incidences of factional fights between the warring NSCN factions in the town is the vacant and empty government quarters.

According to reliable sources, the general public of Medziphema today at a peace rally in the town resolved that all the vacant government quarters in the town must be occupied by the ‘allowed government’ servants, the reason behind this being that the past factional fights have occurred when the armed NSCN cadres were staying in the empty quarters.

Besides the demand for occupying of quarters by the government employees, the peace rallyists resolved that no armed cadres from any underground faction would be allowed to stay in the camp.

“In order to maintain peace in Medziphema, no armed and uniformed cadres should be allowed to stay or camp in government, public or private places,” Mathew Kotsu, Sessional Secretary of the Public Co-ordination Committee, read out one of the resolutions taken at the peace rally during a telephonic conversation with The Morung Express.

Highly reliable sources from the town also said that the public during the rally resolved that anyone harbouring or allowing the armed cadres in their houses will be held responsible for disturbing the peace in the town.

The Chairman of the Medziphema Town Committee, when asked what action the public would take if the resolution undertaken at the peace rally was not heeded by either the public or the underground cadres, tried to avert the question and said that they would take another course of action ‘step by step’. However, the chairman of the MTC refused to divulge what kind of ‘step by step’ action they would take.

The peace rally, which was held at the main junction, started from 12 noon and lasted till 2:30 pm, and was attended by around two thousand people. Sources said that representatives from the tribes of Ao, Sumi, Rengma, Chakhesang etc spoke on the occasion. All the speakers appealed to the armed cadres from different factions not to disturb the peaceful environment in the town, the sources added.
