• Bans kitchen waste in municipal garbage
• Residents given 30 days to adopt decentralised waste treatment
Medziphema, August 24 (MExN): The Medziphema Town Council (MTC) has made it mandatory for all households to compost biodegradable kitchen waste, either through cluster-based arrangements or a central facility, as part of a new solid waste management directive.
An order to this effect was issued by ADC and Executive Officer of MTC, P James Swu (NCS), in pursuance of the Home Department Notification dated May 18, 2026, regarding the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
The order stated that individual composting would not be feasible for households due to space or other practical constraints. Accordingly, the Town Council shall mandatorily establish and maintain a suitable composting facility for the treatment of biodegradable kitchen waste generated by households, with the objective of promoting decentralised management of such waste and ensuring a clean and sustainable Medziphema Town.
Households may form clusters or common composting arrangements at suitable locations, the order said. The ward sanitation committee shall assist in facilitating cluster-based composting whenever necessary.
All households shall comply with the order within 30 days from the date of issue, it added.
The order warned that failure to comply, or continued disposal of biodegradable kitchen waste through the Town Council’s garbage collection system, shall be treated as non-compliance and may attract appropriate action as prescribed under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, and other applicable laws.
All concerned residents have been directed to extend full cooperation for strict implementation. The order shall come into force with immediate effect.
