Several people today turned up at the mega Legal Services Camp held at Peren Local Ground under the aegis of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) and Peren District Legal Services Authority in collaboration with government departments, stakeholders and NGOs.

The camp aimed to make people aware about their entitlements under various enactments and welfare schemes which are provided by various government departments.

Through 30 stalls, the camp extended legal counseling, on spot registration for construction workers by labour department, Aadhaar registration, medical check-up, seedlings distribution by agriculture department, coffee sapling distribution by land resources department, distribution of legal literature, booklets and pamphlets on basic laws, legislation and welfare schemes including showcasing various welfare schemes and facilities by various departments and agencies.

Altogether 1191 people benefitted from this camp, according to NSLSA.

Inaugurating the camp, Justice Ajit Singh, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and Patron-in- Chief NSLSA expressed happiness over the participation of stakeholders from both government and non-government organizations in this camp. “I must say that their positive approach and willingness to help and serve the people of Nagaland has made this legal service camp a reality,” he said.

Stating that it is the duty of a welfare state to protect and preserve the rights of its people, he said “so each and every organ of the legislatures, judiciary and executive plays pivotal role in reaching the poor and the downtrodden and today’s camp is a step forward in this regard.”

He said NSLSA has been continuously working for betterment and upliftment of the people of Nagaland in tandem with the schemes of National Legal Services Authority. He said one important aspect of today’s camp is to showcase various schemes of the government and other organizations which provide various benefits to the people.

He stated that issues, apathies, sorrows and troubles to this region, are seriously needed to be addressed. “Witch hunting, consumption of liquor, child marriage and child trafficking, consumption of narcotic drugs etc. are some challenges which can be targeted effectively through such camps,” he said and requested NSLSA to devise such programmes to eliminate the social menace and cruses from this region to make the beauty of this region more serene.

Justice L.S. Jamir, Judge of Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman of NSLSA informed that the Mega Legal Services Camps began since January 2018 and will also be launched at Phek in June.

Mezivolu T. Therieh, NJS, Member Secretary of NSLSA said this mega legal services camp is a PAN India campaign.

She said when the legal services authority is focusing on a paradigm shift from awareness to empowerment, the state government has promptly responded to cooperate and coordinate in this flagship programme of conducting legal services camps in all the districts at various intervals.

She thanked chief secretary and commissioner Nagaland for given necessary instructions and directives to all the nodal departments and districts to participate in this event.

“In order to affect paradigm shift from awareness to empowerment, the legal services camps would not only make people aware about their entitlements and procedural aspects relating to the same but also connect them to the welfare schemes meant for them,” she said. She said it was indeed a win-win situation for the legal services authorities and the government where “we will be able to achieve our targets as facilitators and that the Government will be able to strengthen the implementation of their projects and schemes,” she said.

Peren Deputy Commissioner of Smita Sarangi, IAS proposed vote of thanks. Earlier, Chief Justice released NSLA’s theme song “Sob ke insaf dibo.”
