The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Monday sought detailed reports into the recent tragic incident leading to five labourers being trapped inside a coal mine in East Jaintia Hills and the death of a pregnant nurse at Ganesh Das Hospital.

A statement issued by the MHRC secretary here said in both the cases, the Commission has issued notice to the Chief Secretary MS Rao, to submit detailed reports within 10 days.

It said the Commission has taken cognizance of the case filed by the Congress Mahila state president on the matter relating to the death of (L) Manisha Turnia who was 24 weeks pregnant alleging the negligence and the overzealousness of the hospital authority to disengage her from duties to which she succumbed due to her ill health.

The Commission also registered a case filed by Yeahyea Hussain, a neighbour of one of the miners trapped in Umpleng, East Jaintia Hills.

According to the complainant, the families of the miners have also been denied permission to visit the incident spot.
The Commission reminded the state of Article 21 of the Constitution that states: “No person shall be deprived of life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law”.
