Newmai News Network Shillong | June 9 With matters relating to videos sexual crimes of various natures and child pornography on the internet becoming a serious cause of concern, Meghalaya police has created two hotline numbers where people can report these crimes. The police has also designated the cyber assistance cell of CCW, CID, police headquarters as the state nodal cyber cell to deal with child pornography, rape and gang rape complaints received at the central online cyber crime reporting portal. In a statement issued here on Saturday, special superintendent of police, CID R Muthu said that these steps have been taken so as to follow the direction issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs to comply with the order of the Supreme Court on October last year. These directions basically concern various areas such as for creating a central reporting mechanism for receiving complaints of child pornography, rape and gang rape content circutated through internet. States have also been directed to make available helpline telephones to receive such complaints besides prompt blocking or removal of such contents on internet in addition to investigation of such complaints. The Ministry of Home Affairs is developing a centralized online reporting platform. Meanwhile, the state police has also appealed to all citizens to cooperate with the state nodal cyber cell. Muthu has been nominated as nodal officer of the state to monitor such videos on the internet.
