Meghalaya Power minister tests positive for COVID-19 at Imphal airport

Power minister of Meghalaya, James K Sangma who arrived at the Imphal airport on Saturday tested positive for COVID-19.

Sangma was accompanying Meghalaya chief minister, Conrad Sangma and others. However, the Meghalaya Chief Minister and others were tested negative for the virus.

They arrived in Imphal by an Indigo flight from Delhi this afternoon, around 1 pm reportedly to hold a discussion on party matters as national leaders of the National People’s Party (NPP).

Sources close to the state unit of NPP said that the national leaders arrived here to discuss on whether the party will field candidates in the upcoming by-elections in Manipur.

Conrad Sangma is the national president of NPP while James K Sangma is the national general secretary (organisation) of the party.

As it is mandatory for the people visiting the state to undergo COVID-19 test, the Meghalaya chief minister and his colleagues were subjected to COVID-19 test using Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits after they arrived at Imphal airport. The Meghalaya Power minister tested positive for COVID-19, sources in the state Health department said.

Following the result, the Power minister halted at the VIP lounge of the airport while the Meghalaya chief minister and others proceeded to Hotel Classic in Imphal where they would stay during their trip in Imphal.

A reliable source said that the Meghalaya Power minister was later taken back to Shillong. The same, however, could not be confirmed officially at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the visiting Meghalaya chief minister and his team were received at Imphal airport by Manipur deputy chief minister Y Joykumar Singh, NPP state unit interim president and state Fishery minister N Kayisii and other two ministers.
