Meghalaya has sought help from South Korea to find a solution on mining in the state which has caused environmental degradation.

During the Bilateral Summit between Republic of Korea and Government of Meghalaya, held in Shillong on Saturday, the latter gave a presentation on mining which highlighted the pollution it has caused over the years.

The State Government sought Korean technology to find ways to purify the rivers and streams.

“One Korean Company which has expertise in solid waste management presented its technology through a presentation,” Shin Bong-Kil South Korea’s Ambassador to India said while speaking to the media after the meeting.

The Meghalaya Government would also be seeking the expertise of a South Korean company in solid waste management and an agreement is likely to be inked during Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s visit to Seoul later this month.

The Ambassador of South Korea to India, Shin Bong-Kil was here to take part in the ongoing Cherry Blossom festival said today that the Meghalaya Government has expressed interest in the Korean company’s expertise in solid waste management.

Meanwhile, Bong-Kil also said South Korea is yet to learn about the potentials of the State so that South Korean companies can make meaningful investments here.

Lauding the natural beauty of Shillong, Bong-Kil said, "The State seems to have immense potential in the tourism sector". He added, “It’s so beautiful here and a relaxed atmosphere. Anyone can come here don’t do anything and relax".
