Meghalaya villagers threaten to boycott elections after bifurcation confusion

Newmai News Network Tura | May 5   Ten villages affected by the bifurcation for the cause of elections in 2012 have threatened to boycott the upcoming state elections if the confusion that has resulted out of this move is not rectified.   The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting in Takurbilla after the creation of two new C&RD blocks of Raksamgre in West Garo Hills and Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills (NGH) on May 3. All the 10 villages are geographically located in NGH.   Ten villages affected by the confusion are Takurbilla (Garo village), Takurbilla (Rabha village), Darugre, Borjhora, Daporpitha, Sarapara, Namapara, Puranipara, Pokirmora and Amtuli. In 2012, these villages were declared electoral villages of the Dadenggre Civil Subdivision under 44 Raksamgre LA, constituency.   “This bifurcation was done without the knowledge of the locals and was done unconstitutionally. Our forefathers have been voting for the Bajengdoba constituency since the creation of Meghalaya and now 1400 new voters have been added, which is not uniform,” said the organizers of the meeting on Friday.   “We will fight for our democratic rights on the basis of democracy and if the state does not listen then it will become dictatorial,” said convenor Sengnang Marak.   The meeting was attended by around 200 people who took a decision to meet the CM, Dr Mukul Sangma as well as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Shillong to seek a redressal of their grievances.   “We also decided that nobody in these 10 villages will take part in coming 2018 Assembly elections if the government does not initiate positive solutions. We will not vote for any political party or candidate,” they added.   The creation of the Raksamgre civil sub division has further fragmented an already fragmented new Bajengdoba C&RD block.   “For official work we have to go to Raksamgre. For medical and financial work we need to go to Dadenggre and have to go to Tikrikilla for C&RD work, leaving our neighbouring Blocks of Resubelpara and Bajengdoba in NGH,” they pointed out.   Senior GSU leader Silchang D Momin meanwhile has blamed people with ‘vested interests’ for the situation being faced by the people under the 10 villages.
