IMPHAL | March 3
Meitei Pangals (Meitei Muslims) have sought the support of the Manipur Chief Minister in pressing the Centre for inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Tribe list of India.
Meitei Pangal Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee (MPSTDC), campaigning for the inclusion of the community in the ST list of India, sought the support of the chief minister. The Committee submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Chief Minister on Tuesday.
"The Chief Minister has given his assurance to extend all possible supports from the government in pressing the Centre to fulfil their demands", MPSTDC spokesperson Md Rabi Khan claimed during a press conference held at Manipur Press Club in Imphal this afternoon. He further claimed that the demand for the inclusion of Meitei Pangals in the ST list is for safeguarding and protecting the future of the community.
MPSTDC has been campaigning for inclusion of the community in the ST list of India since 2014.
The spokesperson of the Committee said that they demand for the inclusion of the Meitei Pangals in the ST list to safeguard the Constitutional rights of the Meitei Pangal community. "If the Meitei Pangals are left behind in the developmental race, Manipur cannot become a properly developed state", he also said.
In its campaign, the Committee had met with the Governor and placed their demand while requesting her to approach the Centre, the Committee spokesperson added.
