Millitary operations continuing in Naga SAZ

•    Eastern Konyak Union (Myanmar) says ‘nonstop bombing’ near Naga villages

•    Situation tense in Hoyat, Throilu and Nyanching villages as civilians unable to move

DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (MExN): Military operations in Naga areas of Myanmar (Naga Self Administered Zone) continued on May 20, as reports emerged that there has been “nonstop bombing” by the Myanmar Army near the forests of Chen Hoyat Village.

A press statement from the Eastern Konyak Union (Myanmar) president, SA Khotai and general secretary, K Honwang informed that Myanmar armed forces began their bombing at 1:00pm today, adding that the situation is tense in the villages of Hoyat, Throilu and Nyanching.  The people in these areas, the union stated, have not been able to move from their villages due to firing incidents every day and night since operations began last week.

The union reminded that the Myanmar government had promised to usher democracy and bring an end to Army rule in the country, while working towards providing educational institutions, medical, electric, economic and road infrastructure. However, it lamented that despite these promises, the Myanmar armed forces are being sent to conduct operations in the area every year.

The Eastern Konyak Union (Myanmar) meanwhile informed that it had contacted to NSCN (K) to maintain peace. The union informed that as per the NSCN (K)’s response, they “are still maintaining peace with Myanmar government with effect from the 2012 cease fire agreement.” The NSCN (K) also claimed that they did not fire a single shot at the Myanmar armed forces even as they undertook several operations against them.

“The NSCN maintain that until and unless withdrawal of cease fire, they will maintain and respect the cease fire ground reality. The NSCN claim that the Myanmar Army has been launching operations in the Naga area in the midst of the peaceful, but NSCN will not gain anything from the Myanmar government by firing at them,” the union added.

According to the NSCN (K), since May 16, when the military operations began, it has “not fired back” and “are maintaining peace situation in the public area.”

The Eastern Konyak Union (Myanmar) meanwhile urged all Naga political leaders, irrespective of border, to work towards ensuring that peace prevails and safeguard the rights of innocent people caught in the midst. The union also reiterated its appeal to the Myanmar and Indian armed forces to “stop firing, bombing in the innocent people’s places without any reason.”

The union meanwhile thanked the NSCN (IM), NNC (Parent Body), FNR and the NMA for their appeals for peace and asked them to continue their efforts.
