Minor’s death in Dimapur sparks more outrage

Several orgs express concerns over increasing ‘crimes against children and women’ in Nagaland

Dimapur, October 24 (MExN): Several organisations on October 24 joined others in condemning the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Dimapur’s Kacharigaon area on October 22 even as they expressed concerns over the increasing crimes against children and women’ in Nagaland. The organisations while calling for speedy justice also demanded ‘exemplary’ punishment against the culprit(s). The accused, identified as one Yilobemo Mozhui was arrested on October 22.

The Naga Mothers Association (NMA) while condemning the shocking act demanded the “severest punishment as per the law” and stated the no bail should be granted to the accused.

While lauding the prompt action of Dimapur police in arresting the accused, it also drew the attention of the State Government on the rise of crimes and violence against girls and women during the pandemic situation in the State.

This has added to the insecurity of lives, the NMA said, further urging the State Government takes serious cognizance and ensure justice is ensured without delay.”

“We convey our deepest condolences and prayers to the victim's family,” it added. 

The Nagaland Alliance for Children and Women’s Right (NACWR) also expressed concern over the increasing “crimes against children and women” in Nagaland, while condemning the inhumane act. “It is a matter of serious concern for the society. Unless women and children feel safe and they are protected from all evil things, we cannot call our society a healthy society,” NACWR said. 

The Alliance also lauded the Police for the swift action in nabbing the accused and demanded a thorough investigation and stringent punishment against the culprit as per the Law. It further conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that God will grant them the strength to bear the loss and pain.

ANPSA: The All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA), Central while condemning the “unspeakable crime perpetrated” said that the use of a sacrosanct premise of learning like a school campus for committing the crime has also “shocked and disturbed the whole school community of Nagaland and beyond.” 

The Association also expressed gratitude to the police department for swift action in apprehending the culprit within six hours, and also to the various organisations and colony councils who stood in solidarity with the bereaved family and the school. “Our hearts go out to the parents of the child as they deal with this tragedy. May the Lord give them comfort and solace,” it added. 

ANPSA, Dimapur: The ANPSA, Dimapur while condemning the dastardly act in “strongest terms” also expressed concerned that such a ‘despicable crime’ had taken place inside “the campus of a school which acts as a temple of learning.”  While lauding the police effort, it further called upon the authorities to “speed up the investigative and trial process, thereby awarding a befitting punishment to the perpetrator(s) as per the law of the land.”  ANPSA Dimapur also offered its deepest condolence and prayer support to the parents and family members of the victim in this hour of bereavement and also “stands with them strongly in support of justice.”

DBSU: The Dimapur Bengali Student’s Union (DBSU), while stating that such “inhuman act” is not acceptable in the society urged the law enforcement agencies to make sure that no stone is left unturned to punish the culprit. The union also extended its deepest condolence to the bereaved family. 

LEH: Expressing shock and condemning the inhuman and heinous act, Lotha Eloe Hoho (LEH) demanded ‘the state government to take immediate action against such crimes from happening in future.’  It also urged the concerned authority and demanded the highest degree of punishment to the accused as per prevalent law. Stating that “rapist and murderer needs to fear the Law”, the LEH requested the BAR Association Nagaland not to release the accused on bail under any circumstances, and to give justice to the victim expeditiously.

MKPON: The Mech Kachari Public Organization Nagaland (MKPON), while condemning the act, said that such deplorable incident smirch the society and is unacceptable. It also expressed appreciation to law enforcing agencies for its swift action in apprehending the culprit and stated that the culprit should not be “granted bail under any circumstances and be given the befitting punishment for the committed crime.” The MKPON also prayed for the departed soul and her bereaved family.

WSTH: Expressing shock over the heinous act, the Western Sümi Totimi Hoho said that such nefarious crime cannot be tolerated.  “It is highly disturbing that the crime was committed within the premises of an educational institution and such acts of evils are slowly creeping inside the Naga Society,” it said. 

 The WSTH also requested the law enforcing agencies to investigate thoroughly leaving no stone unturned and to take up the issue in the fast track court and deliver justice to the bereaved family members.

LLRSU: The Lotha Lower Range Students' Union (LLRSU) has condemned the inhuman act and said that such incident is “not tolerable and acceptable in our peaceful society.” 

While appreciating the police's quick response, the union urged the concern authority to carry out the thorough investigation and reward befitting punishment to the culprit(s).  The LLRSU also urged the citizens to desist from sharing photos of the victim in social media unless done by the competent authority. 

KLSU: The Kohima Lotha Students Union (KLSU) has flayed the brutal act and said that it would not remain a mute spectator over reoccurrence of such incident and appealed the concerned citizens to join hands against such crime. It also urged the law enforcing agencies to thoroughly investigate the case at the highest priority and stated that no bail should granted to the accused under any circumstances and deliver justice to the bereaved family. The KLSU further urged the general public to abstain from circulating the identity and image of the victim on social media platforms.
