Aizawl, July 11 (NNN): Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga said the underground groups in Myanmar are interested to learn about the uniqueness of Mizo Peace Accord signed between the Indian government and the erstwhile underground MNF in 1986.
Giving a brief report of his visit to Thailand, Zoramthanga who has just returned to Aizawl after attending workshop on federalism in Chiangmai, Thailand recently as part of his Burma peace mission, said that the inclusion of Mizo peace accord under the Indian constitution was one of the wonders of the underground groups participating at the event.
Zoramthanga said that he recently visited Thailand to attend Workshop on Federalism at Chiangmai, Thailand as part of his Burma peace mission. The workshop organized as part of peace process between Myanmar government and ethnic based underground groups during 4 to 9 July was attended by over 40 members representing 17 ethnic-based militant groups including Kachins, Karens, Chins, Was, Arakanese and Shans.
Zoramthanga said he addressed the workshop on the second day and talked about the Mizo peace accord signed between the Indian government and the erstwhile underground MNF in 1986.
How was Mizo peace accord included in the Indian constitution and how was the UT government superseded by the MNF were some of curious questions raised by the underground groups during the workshop, he said, adding that the underground group paid high regard to the farsightedness of former MNF chief Laldenga.
Zoramthanga in reply to the members attending the workshop said as per no.4 of ‘sequence of events’ written in the accord it is said that the constitution bill would be tabled in the parliament and Mizoram would be granted statehood simultaneously. This was something which the members wondrously felt unique, he said.
