The Special Operations Team of the Mokokchung Police intercepted two vehicles laden with illicit liquor in Mokokchung on August 31. The vehicles bearing registration numbers NL-01H 3887 and NL-03 1495, both Maruti Gypsy, were reportedly bound for Tuensang.

As per the Mokokchung police, the two vehicles were intercepted during routine security frisking at Ari Junction, near Alichen at around 5:30-6:00 pm. One of the vehicles contained 298 bottles of rum and 4 cases of beer while the other was carrying 116 bottles of rum. The drivers of the vehicles, one Thonghoyu (55 years) and one Khingkho (56 years), both hailing from Tuensang, were detained by the police along with the vehicles and liquor.

While reports were abuzz of a ruling Minister requesting the police to release the confiscated liquor, the Mokokchung police denied it happened. When inquired about it, the Mokokchung police said that a ‘personal secretary’ of a Minister turned up at the Police Station to “inquire” about the incident. The unnamed ‘personal secretary’ along with a Ministerial convoy was reportedly passing through Mokokchung when they heard about the liquor catch.

Stating that the liquor, vehicles and the two drivers were not released, the Mokokchung police said that a case under section 44 of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act was registered at Police Station – II, Mokokchung. The duo was reportedly ferrying the contraband liquor from Dimapur to Tuensang.
