Mokokchung 2025 Crime: 48 cases, major drug & liquor seizures recorded

Drug and liquor-related offences constituted a major portion of criminal cases in Mokokchung district last year. The District Enforcement Force (DEF), Mokokchung registered 48 criminal cases and arrested 67 persons in 2025, as per the district’s annual crime statement.

Out of the total cases, 29 were registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). No cases of murder or attempt to murder were reported during the year. However, one case of rape was recorded, along with two cases of kidnapping and abduction. Other IPC offences included eight cases of theft, seven vehicle accident cases, three cases of cheating, two cases of hurt, and one case each of criminal trespass and outraging the modesty of a woman. Three cases were registered under other IPC provisions.

Crimes registered under Special and Local Laws stood at 19 cases, including 14 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Two cases were registered under the Arms Act, while one case each was recorded under the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

During the year, DEF Mokokchung registered one regular NLTP case and 51 criminal complaints, leading to the seizure of large quantities of illicit liquor. The seizures included 42,105 bottles of rum, 381 bottles of whisky, 16,692 cans of beer, along with 48 bottles of breezer and 240 bottles of vodka. A total of 55 persons were arrested in connection with NLTP violations.

In drug-related offences, 14 NDPS cases were registered and 21 persons arrested. Seizures under the NDPS Act included 262.5 grams of brown sugar/heroin, 951 Spasmo Proxyvon capsules, 4,240 tablets of Alprazolam, 60 tablets of Spasmonil, 39 tablets of Nitrazepam, 189.86 grams of opium, and 111.34 grams of ganja.

Under the Arms Act, DEF Mokokchung registered two cases and arrested seven persons. The seizures comprised one M4 rifle, two country-made .32 pistols, one .22 pistol, and one country-made .22 rifle, along with 30 live rounds of 5.56 mm, six rounds of .32 mm, 20 rounds of .22 mm ammunition, and four magazines.

In comparison with previous years, NLTP enforcement in 2025 resulted in one regular case and 51 criminal complaints, differing from the annual case counts recorded between 30 and 50 cases from 2020 to 2024. NDPS cases in 2025 stood at 14, matching the figures recorded in 2020 and 2022, and remaining significantly lower than the 32 cases registered in 2023.
