Mokokchung DC orders Assam Rifles to vacate land

Dimapur, May 30 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung has in May 25 last, directed the Assam Rifles occupying the plot of land measuring 6880 sq metres, which is triangular in shape adjoining the Deputy Commissioner office in Mokokchung within a period of 15 days pointing out that the Assam Rifles did not have any legal right to the land in question.

The Mokokchung DC, Abhishek Singh, in an order to the Assam Rifles, while directing the Assam Rifles to vacate, stated that it has been made clear to the Army authorities and the Assam Rifles that the land in question has been earmarked for the construction of Deputy Commissioner Office complex for more than 15 years.

Abhishek Singh even pointed out that Major General V N Wadhwa, in a letter, had agreed to vacate the plot land on April 25, 1992 in order to facilitate the construction of the DC complex.

The Deputy Commissioner stated that he is competent to examine land matters and ownership of land pointing out that this was part of his duties and responsibilities, and therefore rejected the plea of the AR that the dispute is between the State Government and the Union of India.

He said that deputy commissioners have been empowered by the State Government, as the nodal officers for all land matters, including land management, registration of sale deeds, mutations, land acquisition etc.

Singh said that on studying the records of the past, it is learnt that the occupation of Assam Rifles of the said plot of land is temporary in nature and they are occupying the land only with the objective of providing assistance to the civil administration in maintenance of law and order.

The DC informed that it will be able to provide alternate accommodation to the units who are presently occupying the land in question.
