The Food Corporation of India (FCI) Food Storage Depot (FSD), Mokokchung on Tuesday disseminated information on the working and functioning of the FCI FSD in Mokokchung which is located in Khensa village, Mokokchung.

During the press conference, Rongsentemjen, Depot In-charge, FCI FSD, Mokokchung informed that FCI is a central government agency that oversees the distribution of food grains across the country. The main objective of FCI is ensuring food security of the nation and looks after the public distribution system. He informed that the main divisional office is in Dimapur while the FSD in Mokokchung covers Mokokchung and Longleng districts, respectively.

The FCI godown at Mokokchung has a storage capacity of 3132 metric tons with around 65000-70000 bags of rice with 86% utilization capacity and the currently has a stock of 2681metric tons of rice, he added. He also said that around 150-200 truckloads of rice reach the Mokokchung godown monthly.

The channel of distribution is routed through the PDS system of Food & Civil Supplies department, Government of Nagaland. The FCI implements three schemes of the central government through the National Food Security Act. It also dispatches rice based on different schemes including the Mid-day Meal and Wheat Based Nutrition Programme.

“A lot of times, people confuse the FCI with the department of Food and Civil Supplies. Our job is to issue the rice to the concerned departments, and it is the job of the concerned department to do the dispatching. We do not issue directly to the public,” he said.

Durgesh Thingujam, Technical Assistant, FCI FSD, Mokokchung, also informed the media that the FCI FSD ensures that the quality of rice is checked and maintained by application of treatments of the stocks at the godown so that the rice bags are free from infestation.

The two officials at the FCI FSD Mokokchung also informed that the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY), a scheme of the central government that provides free food grains to the needy since April 2020 as a part of the COVID relief, will cease to function from September 2022.

The FCI FSD Mokokchung has two staff and three security personnel from the landowner appointed by DC Mokokchung, but they do not have any uniformed personnel to safeguard the godown, informed the officials.
