Mokokchung, November 18 (MExN): World Toilet Day was observed in Mokokchung under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), PHED on November 18. The day was celebrated in advance as it falls on Sunday, November 19. Speaking at the programme at Longkumer Kilem, the guest of honour, T Lemlila Sangtam, SDO (C) Mokokchung underscored that World Toilet Day is observed to encourage people to contribute towards sanitation for a healthier and hygienic lifestyle.
For a hilly state like Nagaland, she said, people know less about the effects of open defecation unlike the stagnant plain areas where many water borne diseases affect the population because of improper maintenance of toilets and open defecation, informed a press release.
Asserting that maintaining proper toilet is the first step towards sanitation, she urged the people to keep their own household toilets clean, proper and safely manageable.
Lemlila also lauded the Executive Engineer, PHED Mokokchung division and its team for working relentlessly in the rural areas to achieve Open Defecation Free status and urged the PHED Mokokchung and its subordinate WATSAN Committees to rededicate to make Mokokchung a healthier and hygienic district.
The guest of honour also gave away the District Swachh Sankalp Se Swachh Sidhi Awards, for which competitions were held from August 17 to September 8. In the district level essay competition, Longrangty Longchar won the first position, while M Nyamsan and Allen M Longkumer bagged second and third positions respectively.
