100 % Literacy rate target to be beacon
MOKOKCHUNG, FEB 20 (DIPR): Mokokchung district will be marking its golden decades this year itself, with the coming months all set in schedule with various activities, specifically literary, with an envisaged vision to make the district “100% literate”.
Mokokchung Planning and Development Board in its meeting held on the February 7 resolved to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Mokokchung district this year.
As part of the celebration, Mokokchung district Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Singh stated that it has been resolved that necessary efforts will be made to make Mokokchung district 100% literate in 2007 thereby becoming the first district in Nagaland to be declared with the 100% mark. In order to achieve this status, it will require necessary participation and involvement of all concerned especially those who are fortunate enough to have received education and become literate, he added. He further said that this endeavor would also require involvement of village councils, education department officials, administrative officials and the public in general.
In order to achieve this mark of 100% literacy, an action plan on the principle of “Each one, teach one” has been formulated. The details of this action plan are as below:
1. The literacy rate of Mokokchung district as per available figures is around 86% thereby meaning that around 14% illiterate people are in the district. This means roughly around 20,000 illiterate people are there in the entire district who are above the age of 7 yrs and need to be made literate.
2. In order to target these 20,000 illiterate people, the strategy envisaged requires that the illiterate persons will have to be identified in each village or ward of Mokokchung district and an equal number literate volunteers will have to be simultaneously identified so that each illiterate person will be adopted by one literate volunteer.
3. Each volunteer will be required to ensure that ‘his’ adopted illiterate person is made literate within the next 6 months. This would require personal attention of the concerned persons and this will be achieved ‘if the pride of making one’s own village/ward district 100% literate is well understood’.
4. These volunteers will be given literacy primers and support with the help of the District Education Officer, Deputy Inspector of Schools and other officials of the education department. Teachers of Government Primary Schools, Government Middle Schools and Government High Schools will also be associated with this programme. Private school teachers are also welcome to join the endeavor.
5. The success of the programme will be ensured if each village council or ward authority can properly identify the illiterate people as well as ensure that sufficient numbers of motivated youth volunteers are mobilized in order to help the illiterate become literate.
6. Respective administrative officers in their respective jurisdictions will co-ordinate this work with the help of the education department and will ensure that each village/ ward/compound identifies illiterate persons and volunteers in the next 3 weeks. All administrative officers are directed to submit a report on action taken by the next DPDB meeting, on March 7.
All concerned are requested to associate with this programme and ensure that Mokokchung district commence its literacy campaign with the objective of making the district 100% literate in the coming months.
