Mokokchung village revives age old institution

Mokokchung | October 4

The Mokokchung village ‘Jungli Mitkar Semto’ was today inaugurated by Supongmeren, MLA, as the chief guest, which can be aptly regarded as a clear indication of modernization of traditional institutions. The ‘Mitkar Semto’ in the traditional Ao Naga society of the old was an institution where the men folk of the village would come together for collective decision making, was like a military cantonment during emergencies, an educational institution where the elderly would teach the young indigenous knowledge and traditional practices and handicraft, a court where criminals were tried.

Supongmeren while speaking during the inauguration of the modern ‘mitkar semto’ reflected on the significance and importance of the ‘mitkar semto.’ He emphasized that the modern age Nagas long for peace and that they need good leaders who will mould the young in the right perspective, that leaders with vision for the future are needed. He opined that the leaders and elders of the ‘mitkar semto’ should, being the highest decision making body of the village, be futuristic in their outlook. He also advised that only if there are such leaders, there can be peace and development, paving economic prosperity and employment opportunities for the young. Not unexpectedly, his speech also connoted a certain political overtone, like, he has been receiving support from the Mokokchung villagers and that he has all along been working hand in hand with the leaders hailing from the village, and that he is looking forward to work together with the villagers, mutually supporting each other, even in the near future.

A welcome address by T.Alem Longkumer, Riongsanger Putu samenba, a speech on significance of the ‘mitkar semto’ by S.Bur Longkumer, Tatar of Mokokchung village, and construction committee report by S.S.Yanger Pongen, also marked the function. The function was chaired by Ngangshi Jamir while the vote of thanks was moved by Wati Pongen, Tatar. The chief guest was accompanied by a host of party workers, including the 25 ACCC President Mayangwati, who also delivered a brief speech.
