DIMAPUR, JUNE 29 (MExN): In view of the test result found positive for added formalin in fresh fish and fish products, import of fresh fish and other fish products into the districts of Mokokchung and Zunheboto from outside has been strictly prohibited in the interest of the public health till further order. A report from the DIPR informed that the Mokokchung DC has cautioned that failure to comply with the order shall be punished as per the provision of the law. It was also reported that on June 28, the District Administration along with MMC and officials from Medical and Food Safety conducted a raid and seized few kgs of formalin added fish from Alongmen ward, which was disposed off the same day. Another DIPR report informed that the Zunheboto DC said the import prohibition would be in place until such time the availability of fresh fish in the district is certified as safe for human consumption by the food safety officer in accordance to the Food Safety Standards (Food Product Standard & Food Addictive) Regulation 2011 and provisions of Food Safety & Standard Act, 2006. The Zunheboto DC stated that instances of availability of formalin treated fresh fish product in the district cannot be ruled out since almost all the fresh fish product are imported from outside the state. Meanwhile, led by the Chumukedima District Administration, the Food Safety officials carried out an inspection drive to detect formalin laced fish at Chumukedima area on the evening of June 28. According to officials, the investigating team found about 700-800 kgs of fish tested formalin positive. It was disposed off the next day. DCCI cautions The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) also released a statement today reminding consumers that import of fish from outside the state has been stopped. It however cautioned that due to the porous border some miscreants could take undue advantage and import fish for making money and could damage the image of the business community. The DCCI cautioned that anyone found indulging in such activities would have strict action taken against them by the business community. It further asked the district administration and police to ensure that no such imports are allowed even from neighbouring Assam markets. It also requested the public to be vigilant and report the matter to the competent authority. Local fish from within Nagaland does not come under the purview, however the DCCI cautioned dealers from price racketeering. Meanwhile, DCCI Grievances Cell Convener Omega Yeptho along with members had a meeting with dry fish wholesalers and took assurance from them that price of dry fish will not be increased despite being offseason. The dry fish wholesalers on request of the DCCI have also brought down prices. The DCCI warned retailers that since the wholesale price has been brought down and fixed, it will strictly monitor the retailing price.
